Chapter Twenty

Back in School

During the months following the two couples’ return from Cuba, Gina and Eli continued to build their relationship even though from the day they met, it was as though they were already married. Their attraction to each other had been instantaneous when they first met at the bank and grew from then on. Seldom did they argue except to amuse each other, and if and when they got married, they both agreed absolutely nothing would change. They immediately bonded as though a bucket of super glue was poured over them. The idea of visiting once a month worked well, but a few times it was twice a month. At spring break, Eli asked, “Gina, would you like to go to Cancun?”

“I want a bed, Eli. No alarm clock. No long plane rides. No books. Lots of sex. Lots of lying by the pool. Can you fix that up for me?”

“Palm Springs okay?”

“Book it!”

He did, and it was perfect. She flew into Los Angeles, met Eli, and camped by the pool at the Marriott in Palm Desert for a week. While they were there, they made plans for the summer. They booked direct flights to Havana for June 15 and asked Josh and Kelsi to do the same. They would meet with Julio and Luis on the 16th and hopefully finalize the beach house partnership.

Kelsi and Josh had now lived together for over two years and were best friends first and passionate lovers second. The issue with this couple was the huge divide between Josh’s courtroom skills and Kelsi’s lack of the same. However, Kelsi was the worker: she would wear a keyboard out researching what Josh needed for a trial, and he would put together his script and acting job. Kelsi’s scores on tests in law school usually bettered Josh because of how hard she studied.

“Josh, I would let you do the case study on your upcoming assignment, but you always get bored and start watching porn. And as you know, that leads to other distractions. So I’m going to do it for you,” Kelsi said.

“Distractions be much fun.”

As a team, they were unstoppable. But this was college, mock trials, and the University of Miami School of Law, not Harvard. Yet, many thought Josh could hold his own with them. Very few trial lawyers come out of law school ready for a heavyweight bout. He was one of the rare litigators. A natural.

The beach house was not forgotten during this time. Josh and Kelsi researched ways to own the property in partnership with Cuban citizens. What would happen with the money and how much tax would be owed on it? After analyzing all of Carmine and Bernie’s old tax forms, Kelsi found that Bernie did file for both of them in the US and Cuba. He had to file in America in order to get the foreign tax credit paid in Cuba applied against the US taxes. He did it every year, and he was shrewd about it.
